Question Description

I’m trying to learn for my Psychology class and I’m stuck. Can you help?

Introduction

The purpose of this Homework assignment is to introduce you to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). The articles you will be using for this assignment reference the DSM-IV and a new DSM-5 was published in 2013, but the controversy continues. One of the complaints that is referenced in the Point article is about the Multiaxial Assessment–Axis I-V and this has been removed from the DSM-5. Only a diagnoses is given–not a broad assessment of the person in the process of making a diagnosis as was previously the case.

The DSM-5 uses “5” instead of Roman Numerals as was the case for previous Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals. The intent is so that minor revisions can be made as research brings new information about the diagnoses to light and instead of needed a new edition the revisions can be referred to as DSM-5.1, DSM-5.2, etc.

After reading the chapter for this unit, the Lecture and related websites and exploring the information on the textbook website read the following 2 articles listed below (articles can also be found in Files) and answer the questions below. When making references to sources, remember to give credit where credit is due. 300 words minimum for answers to questions–not for each individual question. Questions need to be identified but do not count in the 300 word minimum expected for the assignment.

Specific quotes from the articles need to be cited to support your observations.

The APA format needs to be used–title page, abstract, page numbers, DS, citations and reference page.

7. In your opinion, which article provides a stronger case and why?
8. In your opinion, does a diagnosis of a mental illness provide awareness of one’s illness and the ability to manage it or does it provide an excuse for negative behaviors?
